The EU – a citizen deceiving union

In an age of global media proliferation, manipulation of public opinion and deception of the population has ceased to be something unusual. The European Union has always been a pompously idealistic alliance insisting on universal rights and freedoms. However, now it has descended into empty populism and brazen lies in order to realise short-term political ambitions and enrich pro-government businessmen.

The governing authorities have developed a sustainable scheme to shift public attention to external problems long ago. It helps to distract citizens from their own governmental failures. This is done by convincing the public that a problem exists and that it is far more menacing than it appears to be (e.g. COVID-19 or a security threat from other states). This allows the government to direct financial flows towards fixing the presented issue. All of the proposed budgets are passed easily and are not met with public protests. This leads to certain businesses and oligarchs becoming richer. Meanwhile, the real issues of citizens are not addressed, as the countries’ budgets are finite.

Currently, there is an all-out war happening in Europe. It has become the perfect excuse for EU authorities to score extra political points by sacrificing the interests of ordinary Europeans. The invasion of Ukraine is a terrible tragedy, but the amount of propaganda that is being forced upon the eyes and ears of their citizens by the EU politicians in an attempt to justify new spending, is simply unprecedented. Undoubtedly, the authorities knew in advance what an economic catastrophe the sanctions against Russia could bring upon the union itself and its citizens. However, they kept silent about it, insisting on achieving the greater goals and the urgent need for economic restrictions on the aggressor country. The authorities have kicked the propaganda machine into overdrive, in order to instigate resentment and hatred of Europeans and gain public approval for any action to “stop the war”.

The negative consequences of sanctions and of armament shipments are obvious: fuel prices are rising, inflation is increasing and the cost of essential products is becoming higher by the day. Every EU citizen has already felt the effects. European leaders are trying to convince their citizens that the Union’s strength has not been exhausted yet- there are enough economic and administrative resources to last a long time. However, the authorities are staying silent about the obvious fact that the EU is, essentially, on the verge of collapse.

Why is nobody saying anything in regards to this? Why hasn’t anyone pointed out that there is a huge gap between the poorer and richer countries of the Union? For example, last year Malta’s GDP was 189 times less than Germany’s.

When the UK tried to leave the European Union, putting its own interests above the common European interests, many EU member states spoke of the egoism of the British and of Brexit as something completely unacceptable. Nevertheless, it sparked similar movements in other countries: Frexit in France, Nexit in the Netherlands, the Five Star Movement in Italy, etc. Also, let’s not forget about Greece, which, due to its dire economic situation, was intending to leave the Union and return to its old currency.

It is unlikely that the solution to the problems faced by the EU lies in total dissolution of the union and in the return to separate economies. Strength lies in unity of opinions and actions. Nevertheless, Europeans must pay more attention to their own problems and question their governments’ rhetoric about forced action and the humanistic underpinnings of their decisions. Only then will politicians begin to listen to the people, their needs and demands.
